All You Need To Know About Teeth Whitening

Stained teeth can be a cause for concern for most people. Besides, they can affect your self-esteem since you cannot smile with confidence. Below is an article discussing the causes of teeth stains, how you can whiten your teeth and restore your brilliant smile.

What Are The Causes Of Teeth Stains?

Understanding the causes of teeth stains and discolouration will help you keep your teeth white. Some common causes include the following:

Poor dental hygiene, such as failing to brush your teeth after every meal, will cause food particles to stick on your teeth, thus staining them.

Drinking coloured fluids such as wine, cola and coffee could also discolour your teeth. It is therefore advisable to swish your mouth with water after consuming these drinks.

Medical conditions such as rickets, liver and metabolic diseases can discolour your teeth. Some antibiotics and treatments, such as neck radiation, can also cause the teeth to discolour.

If you live in an area where the water has high fluoride content, your teeth are likely to discolour.

Below are some proven ways to do teeth whitening

DIY Teeth Whitening

Oil pulling involves swishing natural oils such as coconut, sunflower or sesame oil in your mouth. These oils are known to kill bacteria and eliminate plaque. You could also opt to brush your teeth using baking soda. The compound contains teeth whitening elements. Baking soda does not give an instant result. Therefore, you will have to brush your teeth regularly for visible results.

Hydrogen peroxide is a bleaching agent that has been used to whiten teeth over the years. For faster results, mix the agent with baking soda and dilute the solution with water. Some fruits such as apples and pineapples have also been known to whiten teeth.

Professional Teeth Whitening

Professional teeth whitening occurs at the dentist's clinic. The dentist checks your teeth to determine their current shade. They will use gauzes and dental equipment to separate your cheeks and lips from the teeth. The dentist will then apply a whitening compound (such as hydrogen or carbamide peroxide) to the teeth. They will use a laser to activate the compound and leave it to work for 30-60 minutes. After this, the dentist will record the shade of your teeth to determine the effectiveness of the compound. You may have to attend several dental sessions before your teeth get to the desired shade.

You now have a comprehensive understanding of the causes of teeth staining and how you can whiten your teeth. Once you whiten your teeth, observe proper dental hygiene to prevent subsequent discolouration.
